2023 Intensive Beginning Birding Course

Pelican Island Audubon Society (PIAS) extends an invitation to you to join its 2023 Intensive Beginning Birding course taught by experienced volunteers: Juanita Baker, Ph.D. and David Simpson with 4 intensive classes via Zoom with many beautiful photographs representing Indian River County’s variety of Bird Families and the basics of understanding and appreciating birds’ beauty, behavior, and unique skills and Florida’s habitats, plus 2 field trips in small groups with an expert field guide to local “birding Hotspots” helping you learn what to look for, bird identification & location skills as well as understanding and appreciating our Florida wonders.  Learning Information about bird behavior and the world of birds will give you a deeper appreciation and charm you through the antics of these colorful creatures.  The classes are held in the evenings, and the field trips are held on weekends so that those who work can attend.

This Intensive Beginning Birding course introduces you to identification and techniques so that you learn bird basics and can appreciate more why birds are the way they are that will help you identify them…their size, shape, foods, colors, songs, typical behaviors, and mating rituals that not only help us identify the birds but enjoy them.  We cover much for all birders, resources, and access to links and websites to enhance your understanding of habitats, geographical locations, birds, quick classification, and in what season the birds might be found will help you locate and ID birds. The basic equipment you might want to use and the birders’ field skills will be reviewed.  Finally, how to get near to birds to view them yet be responsible and not harm them. Brief history and current destructive forces of our birds, conservation efforts, and what we can do for birds and all wildlife are covered.

Due to continuing contagious Covid-19 Omicron cases in our county, we will hold all classes via zoom and when you join the field trips, we request you please be fully vaccinated with a booster. Mask wearing will be expected and appreciated when inside cars with other non family class members on both field trips.  Thank you!
