Environmental Educator Position for an after-school, environmental-based outdoor and hands-on science program

The Pelican Island Audubon Society seeks a position for its environmental and science based outdoor program we call Audubon Advocates. Audubon Advocates is an experiential, hands-on opportunity to introduce underserved children to science through outdoor activities. This program is run at our Audubon House at 195 9th St. SE (Oslo Rd.) in Vero Beach, FL 32962. The core aspect of our program involves bringing in fifth grade students from four (4) different schools, each school’s students come one day a week, from 3:15 pm to 6:00 pm.  Depending on funding, additional programs and opportunities may involve other county school students. 

The position is for ~32 weeks and corresponds to the school calendar but does not run for the entire school year. Weekly hours will be roughly 30-33 hours during the school year. The position is also responsible for operating 4-5 weeks of summer camp between the months of June-August. 

During COVID-19, Audubon Advocates will operate virtually in school or at home and will resume in person instruction once it is safe. 

Position: 

Environmental Educator: This position is part time, up to 30-33 hours per week during the program operation (32 weeks). Applicant should have strong interests in science, nature advocacy and the environment. Responsibilities include preparing weekly curriculum, secure weekly equipment needed for session topic, oversee conservation action activities, hiking and kayaking, and providing in person and virtual instruction to the students. Has experience using technology for live streaming, developing videos, communicating through platforms and is a creative problem solver.

Position involves picking up students and dropping them off at the school in our 15-passenger van and having a FDLE/VECHS background check.  Bachelor’s degree is preferred, but an associate degree with excellent experience will be considered.  Current CPR certification required. Salary based on qualifications.
