Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge

Pelican Island NWR has the distinction of being the first National Wildlife Refuge formed in the United State back in 1903. An observation tower overlooks the rookery island, and the surrounding area has various hiking trails allowing access throughout the refuge.

Driving directions from the PINWR web site:
From I-95:
Exit 156 (Fellsmere Rd, also County Road 512) East, continue on Fellsmere Road to US 1 in Sebastian, turn right onto US1 traveling south, turn left at the intersection of Wabasso Road (County Road 510), continue on Wabasso Road over the Indian River Lagoon to the intersection of A1A, turn left on A1A traveling north and drive 3.7 miles, turn left onto Historic Jungle Trail.

From US 1:
On US1 in Wabasso (south of Sebastian and North of Vero Beach), turn and travel east on to Wabasso Road (County Road 510), continue on Wabasso Road over the Indian River Lagoon to the intersection of A1A, turn left on A1A traveling north and drive 3.7 miles, turn left onto Historic Jungle Trail.

From A1A:

Traveling South - Cross over the Sebastian Inlet State Park Bridge (South of Melbourne Beach), continue for 3 miles, turn right onto Historic Jungle Trail.

Traveling North - From Vero Beach, at the intersection of Wabasso Road (County Road 510) continue to drive north 3.7 miles on A1A, turn left onto Historic Jungle Trail.

The map shows the intersection of North Jungle Trail and A1A. Proceed south from this point on Jungle Trail, the restrooms and parking lot will be on your left and a bit further down the road the Pelican Island Viewing Area will be on your right.
